This drone, which is generally designed for use in the space industry and equipped with a separated ion engine, flies without a propeller or engine and without making the slightest noise.
Ionizing the nitrogen molecules
No engines, no propellers or reactors, so no sound. Ion Drive is an electro-aerodynamically propelled aircraft.
The prototype of the aircraft is part of a project led by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and supported by NASA as part of the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts program.
The device moves and flies thanks to tiny fins, which are high-voltage electrodes. In contact with the air mass, they ionize nitrogen molecules, which accelerates them and propels the aircraft forward.
This is called an ion engine. This is nothing new, as the first prototypes of this type of propulsion system date back to the 1950s.
This type of engine is very suitable for the aerospace sector, since the thrust force obtained is quite low, because there is no need to carry fuel, it does a lot of work at low cost. The power supply can come from solar panels.
