If you want to master combat in Elden Ring, you need to understand the Poise base stat, how to increase it, and why it is so important in battle.
Here is everything you need to know about Poise in Elden Ring!
How Do Poise & Stagger Work in Elden Ring?
What is Poise & “Poise HP” in Elden Ring?
Poise is a base stat in Elden Ring defined by your armor. This stat determines your character’s resistance against flinching and staggering from enemy attacks.
This stat is not only present on the playable character. Each enemy in Elden Ring has its own Poise value, which determines how easy or hard it is to stagger them in combat.
Poise Points, also known as Poise HP, indicate the amount of available poise-breaking damage you can take before being staggered.
You can determine how many Poise Points your character has in the Status or Equipment menu options. You can find this information right below the Equip Load data.
How to Increase Poise in Elden Ring
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways you can increase this base stat to improve your Poise in Elden Ring!
Each armor has its individual Poise values, but you can boost this value further with the following items:
--Bull-Goat’s Talisman – Increases Poise by 33%
--Baldachin’s Blessing / Radiant Baldachin’s Blessing – Increases Poise by 52%
--Endure Skill in some weapons – Can be purchased at Knight Bernahl at Warmaster’s Shack
--Leaden Hardtear – Prevents staggering from certain damage for 10 seconds but does not prevent knockdowns
--Ironjar Aromatic – Boosts poise and adds many other resistances
How Staggering Works and Types of Staggering in Elden Ring
Poise indicates the amount of Poise damage you can take before breaking your posture. The same applies to enemies.
For example, if your Poise is 60, you will be staggered after receiving 61 points of poise damage. The same logic applies to enemies; once their Poise reaches one point below zero, they will stagger.
However, not all staggers come equal. When it comes to enemies, depleting their Poise bar breaks their posture and allows you to deal Critical damage to them.
The type of stagger you receive depends on the type of weapon you are being attacked with:
--Weak Stagger: After hit, cannot move for a third to half a second. Caused by standard weapons.
--Heavy Stagger: After hit, cannot move for around a second. Caused by Great type weapons.
--Knock-down: After hit, knocked completely off feet, cannot continue any actions until after recovery animation is completed. Caused by Colossal weapons.
For PvP, the only types of staggering allowed are weak and heavy. Even if another player attacks you with a Colossal weapon, you will still only get heavy staggering.
Understanding these Poise and Staggering principles will make it a lot easier to master combat in Elden Ring!
