CATL, China’s leading lithium battery manufacturer, has officially launched a new battery yesterday. It was announced that the Qilin battery has an ultra-high energy density. With the use of the Qilin battery in electric vehicles, the vehicles will reach a range of more than 1000 kilometers. (620 miles)
According to official data, the energy density of Qilin batteries using triple (nickel-cobalt-manganese) material can reach 255 Wh/kg, while the energy density of batteries using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) material can reach up to 160 Wh per kilogram.
Compared to the battery currently used by Tesla, the Qilin battery has almost the same energy density, but considering the same raw material and the same size, the Qilin battery has 13% more power than Tesla’s new battery.
In addition, the new battery expands the cooling area of the battery cell up to 4 times, reducing the time required to adjust the temperature of the battery cell in half, thus minimizing the heating problem when the battery is fast charged.
CATL is currently the world leader in automotive lithium batteries, with 35% market share in the first quarter of this year, about 20% ahead of LG Chem. Installed battery volume in China reached 83.1 GWh, up 100.8 percent compared to the same period last year.
