Volvo tests wireless charging in its cars

Several Volvo XC40 Recharges, each traveling around 100,000 km/year, will be entrusted to a Gothenburg-based taxi company. In addition to running errands for customers, these will be used for 3 years to test a new wireless charging system.

Ground-integrated chargers developed by the Momentum Dynamics company, capable of delivering more than 40 kW, that is, 4 times faster than an 11 kW cable charger, will be tested for 3 years.

Mats Moberg, Head of Research and Development at Volvo, said: “The Gothenburg Green City Zone initiative allows us to test promising new technologies in the real world and evaluate them over time for possible widespread deployment in the future.

It is a good way to evaluate alternative charging options for our electric vehicles.”
