What is a USB cable? Types of USB cables

In this article, we will explain the usage areas of the USB cable and what it is used for.

USB cable (Universal Serial Bus) is the most used wired method to transfer data between two devices. This cable allows content to flow between devices and computers or between two computers. These cables, which are indispensable for many devices, have a universal connector that makes their use practical.

Most webcams work with a USB cable, so it’s compatible with all computer models and brands. More commonly known as “Plug and Play technology”, this operating mode makes it possible to connect and operate the webcam without the need to restart the computer or install software.

Usage Areas of USB Cable

Camcorders, printers, storage equipment, keyboards, headphones, mice, cameras, all these devices are now designed to work with a USB cable. This technology allows data to be transferred quickly between devices and a computer. Content can be changed in both directions.

Before the advent of the USB cable, there were various connection systems. Connecting computers and devices was difficult due to the large number of connectors on the market. Therefore, it was necessary to standardize these processes in order to simplify connections and make computers compatible with all working devices such as peripherals.

Thanks to USB cables, it is now possible to buy electronic devices without asking questions. Plug and Play technology allows them to connect to computers without the need to reboot the system.

USB cable types

There are several types of USB cables available nowadays.

  • USB type A: classic USB cable, this is the most commonly used cable;
  • USB type B: square format, often used with large devices such as scanners or printers;
  • USB mini B: smaller than conventional format and generally compatible with mobile phones ;
  • USB C: these are the new connectors used in Apple devices (phones and computers). They allow devices to charge and send data.

Recently, products such as wireless mice and keyboards have come out, but wireless devices have a delay time, instead wired devices may be preferred, because the latency is almost zero. In addition, wireless devices may be affected by interference from surrounding frequencies, which may interrupt mouse movements or disable the mouse until this issue is resolved.
